All I Wanna Do is Chat Pop Culture with You!

Listen team, I’m going to put something out there and ask you all to hold me accountable. I have a tendency to decide to make MAJOR life decisions right around the New Year. So come December when I get the urge to shake up my life again, I’m going to write a blog post and you’re going to tell me to cool my jets. I’ll explain more later, but basically I’m not free on Saturdays right now.

Saturdays are frequently when I queue up my posts. (So you know all of those times where I say “Today, I decided to…” well that “today” was usually like a Saturday or basically any other time than when I actually scheduled the post. Yes, sorry, I have been LYING to you about time for years. But time is a flat circle anyway, right?

I promise more very special episodes are on the horizon, but for now I thought I’d offer you a few more options from deep within the files of my laptop. I know what you’re thinking, and no, I’m not talking about a slideshow depicting the history of Joey Lawrence’s hair. Let me explain.

A year ago, I took a writing class from the lovely Lisa Jakub. It was a memoir writing class, and I somehow decided that taking the class would inspire me to write a memoir. (This was an incorrect assumption.)

Instead, I  learned a very expensive lesson and discovered once and for all that nothing makes my heart flutter like writing about Pop Culture. Suffice it to say that this does NOT create an adequate through-line for a book. As it turns out, the many incarnations of Prince’s public persona is not what one might refer to as an “organizing principle.”

While Lisa was a lovely and encouraging coach, I would not recommend taking a memoir writing class unless you have already figured out some kind of legitimate idea for a memoir. But that brings me back to my current point. I’ve written a lot of personal essays about life and Pop Culture. SO if you’re pumped to hear about the time I snubbed Billy Dee Williams, a poignant recollection on nostalgia through the lens of Andy Gibb’s hair, and my breakup mixtape then stay tuned!

If you’re bummed that you will have to wait several weeks to get additional pro-tips on how to avoid drug dealers who look like backup singers for The Jacksons*, then here is a handy list of some of my favorites to tide you over until I can binge watch television again:

I’m A Late Adopter: Please Follow Me on Twitter

So there’s this thing called Social Media. I got Facebook when all the cool kids were doing it and then after that I basically just found everything else super intimidating. But I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts lately and they’re all on Twitter and I want to follow all of them and finally the FOMO became too much.

Also, I haven’t actually tweeted anything yet…but I’m working on it!

So please help a girl out and follow me @veryspecialblog (there was no room for the “the.” I’m very upset about it) and I will tweet things at you or retweet your things. Basically, I’ll do whatever one does on this thing just as soon as I figure out what that is. (Please send help in the comment box below.)

Blogging from A to Z

I’ve signed up for the April 2016 Blogging from A to Z Challenge! Each day of April (excluding Sunday’s) requires a post on a topic that matches the day’s letter (April 1st is A and so on and so forth). You can see me right wayyy down the list. I’m number 1243.

So what does this mean for The VSB?
-I’ll be posting about a different sitcom’s very special episode for each letter (so for P I’ll be doing Punky Brewster’s Cherie Life Saver. Yep, that’s the episode about the dangers of refrigerators.)
-Since I have to cover a sitcom for every letter of the alphabet, this will be quite a challenge for me! I’ll have to watch sitcoms I’ve never watched before (Eight is Enough, for example) but I think it will be a good opportunity to keep myself from posting about different versions of Full House for the rest of eternity.
-There are a couple of exceptions to this format. Try as I might, I could not find a very special episode of Unsolved Mysteries, so for letters like “U” I’ll be using the episode title as my guide instead of the series title.

I’m excited and I hope you are too! And now, I’ve got to get to work so I can actually deliver on this promise in April!

NaBloPoMo Reflections, Tips, and Tricks

This year I decided that I had made NaBloPoMo way to hard on myself last year. Last year, I valiantly reviewed a Very Special Episode most days and those posts were lengthy. So this year I focused on alternating between long and short posts, which was really great on the nights that I felt wiped out from work and didn’t feel like churning anything out.

And somehow I managed to suck even more at cross-posting to BlogHer than I did last year. So I tried to catch up one night by cross-posting like 4 posts in one fell swoop. This caused them to label me as a spammer and I have since had my account locked. This turned out to be the BEST THING EVER! It turns out that I hate cross-posting. I also hate the design of that website. Somehow I felt obligated to cross-post to “get the most out of NaBloPoMo” and being locked-out of my account released me from the self-imposed chore that I had created. (If this ever happens to you, you can contact the website to have them re-open your account. But I opted to just say goodbye.)

Most of all, this year I remembered that NaBloPoMo is about community. Sure, it’s about giving yourself a challenge. But that challenge wouldn’t be nearly as fun if you weren’t checking out all of the other blogs participating as well. So this year I read more, liked more, and shared more. This made the entire process less-stressful and more fun.

Note to self: You’re going to look back at this post while agonizing over whether or not you should do NaBloPoMo again. And I’m telling you that you probably shouldn’t. But you, future self, are probably reading this and saying, “Yeah, I see what you’re saying, but I want the new badge that says NaBloPoMo 2016.”

NaBloPloMo Favorites

As NaBloPoMo swiftly draws to a close, I’d like to give one more shout-out to awesome posts I read around the blogosphere. All of the posts below are from fellow WordPress bloggers and have the tag “nablopomo.”

Peanut Butter Crepes by Kat’s 9 Lives
As you well know, I am no chef. But I enjoyed reading about these crepes, nonetheless. And if you do look to cook, then you can make them from this recipe!

Riding the Tide: Life Lessons from the Jellies by totallyKelly!
I’m really feeling these life lessons right now. I’ve always thought jellyfish were cool creatures, but now I have a deeper respect for them.

250 Posts!

This is my 250th post on The Very Special Blog! To commemorate this momentous occasion, I thought I would share some of my favorite posts. And what I discovered is that my favorite posts are basically the ones you commented the most on. Turns out I like talking to you people!

So here are some of “our” favorites posts:

The time that Marcia broke her nose and I thoroughly enjoyed her downfall:
When we collectively coveted the outfits from Teen Witch:

This outfit is so cool it will make you not mind catcalls

When Johnny Depp accepted his first case on 21 Jump Street:

When we all laughed because “Alice” got addicted to all of the drugs ever on the planet, even the ones that aren’t addictive:
That time Roseanne and Family Matters were pitted against each other in a take-no-prisoners Disney World episode showdown:

When very special episodes move me to tears:

And yes, that time someone finally had sex on The Facts of Life:

The Very Special Notebook is Missing!

Have you seen me?

On Saturday, I took notes on the (spoiler alert) 90-minute special The Facts of Life Goes to Paris. Sunday morning, I was looking for The Very Special Notebook so I could take further notes on something else that I’m not going to tell you about yet! As of this morning, The Very Special Notebook is still nowhere to be found! This is really putting a damper on my blog planning…

Oh just kidding…I found it under a pillow & in between the couch cushions. Guess I should have checked there before I sifted through the trash…yuck!

Things are happening on The Very Special Blog!

I just scheduled a bunch of things! But I can’t say what they are because it will mess up the schedule. And then after that, I scheduled another thing that I’m also really excited about. But I don’t want to talk about that yet because it needs to wait until after the first thing! Also, does anyone else get really nervous when they use the post scheduler? Like maybe it won’t actually schedule and will instead publish immediately? Okay. Well. I scheduled things! Yay!

Happy Birth Month, Very Special Blog!

I was waxing poetic about my love of ridiculous “life lesson” episodes from the TV shows of my youth (just about a year ago this month!) and how I just wanted to talk about all of the nitty gritty details of schmaltz forever. So my boyfriend suggested the title of this blog (maybe it was a subtle hint to share these thoughts with the world/not him. But I signed him up as an email subscriber so ha!) Over the past year, these has evolved into a blog not just about very special episodes but bits of entertainment, culture, and memory that are very special to me! It’s been really fun connecting with other internet-people who also remember these little bits of Americana and love to adoringly make-fun as well.
